‘Aged to Perfection’ podcast gets a new logo 0

I won’t be devoting much time to the lgbtSr website, as I posted the other day, but the Facebook page and the podcasts are still very much alive and well. I’ll also post the occasional “special edition” there for an interview or column.

My co-host Rick Rose and I are retooling the podcasts over the next couple months, and the show has both a new logo, AND a new intro!  Listen here.  Our guest this week is sperm donor extraordinaire Trent Arsenault. Hear you there! – Mark/Editor

It’s about equality, not “dignity and respect” 0

Cross-posted from lgbtSr.org:

It’s been a long time since I wrote one of these ‘Café Moi’ pieces, but I felt compelled to address this after last night’s podcast, when my co-host Rick Rose brought up the current firestorm over Tom Akin’s “legitimate rape” comment.

The entire spectrum of Republicans, from the dwindling and increasingly impotent establishment to the shrill, irrationally furious Tea Party (aka Christian extremists), is telling Akin to step aside. Not because his comment was, as they claim, terribly offensive, but because he made the mistake of being very plain spoken about what they think: despite having plenty of women in their ranks, the core of the GOP considers, at the deepest level (so deep they probably can’t admit it to themselves), women to be property, in spirit if not in law. As for girls? Forget it. If things go their way we could someday regularly see 12 year old girls giving birth to their father’s (or uncle’s or brother’s) children from incestuous rape because, well, the Bible tells them so. (Their exemption-free prohibition on abortion, as expected in their party platform, is not balanced by any call to make impregnating a woman or girl through rape or incest a capital crime; that would at least make the transparency of their anti-female worldview a bit more opaque).

This discussion blindsided me a bit; I was expecting to just have a light-hearted chat with our guest about the entrepreneurial spirit and taking risks to follow our passions. Instead I was reminded of the proposed GOP platform, and in it, a plank opposing marriage equality (of course) but – how exciting! how gracious! how kind! – extending “dignity and respect” to all people, which means us.

Think about it: the Republican Party is willing to extend dignity and respect to LGBT people, as if these are things that can be extended. Or maybe they’re acknowledging our worth, however diminished it is compared to theirs. It reminds me of the unfortunate embrace of “tolerance” in our culture, as one may tolerate a rodent as long as it isn’t eating the cereal. I have no interest in being tolerated. Nor do I fall for the poison flowers of “dignity and respect,” much as a snake might offer to a mouse before she eats it.

“Dignity and respect” are meaningless, words meant to mollify and deceive. It is equality, and nothing short of equality, we demand, whether it is offered or not.

lgbtSr at UNITY 2012 (day 1) 0

Cross-posted from lgbtSr.org:

At this writing my mind is on Las Vegas time but my body’s still in New York (evidenced by the 3:00 am wake up this morning). My partner Frank and I left our apartment at 24th and Third yesterday morning, and here we are watching the sun rise over New York, New York (the casino)!

This is the first year that NLGJA (National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association) has been part of the UNITY alliance. For reasons too complicated and unclear, our entry into the organization was . . . postponed for a number of years.  Now we’re here, and as things have turned out, NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) is NOT part of the alliance, despite having been a founding member.  I’m not really taking time now to examine these turns of events, they just are what they are.  I was curious on arrival what effect the departure of NABJ would have on the attendance total, but the numbers seem solid.  NLGJA is joined by NAHJ (Hispanic Journalists), AAJA (Asian Journalists) and NAJA (Native American Journalists).

Frank and I opted to stay at the renovated Tropicana, where the rate was half the cost of conference host Mandalay Bay.  Plus it’s a very short tram ride or even a walk (“even a walk” is an odd thing for someone from Manhattan to say, but it’s very hot here) from one hotel to the other.

Tired from a day of travelling, we only managed to register, take a quick stroll around the exhibitors hall (where I had the pleasure of running into an old colleague still at Reuters, staffing their booth), and the first half of the opening ceremony.  As much as I told myself I’d be hitting the receptions, I’m an early-to-bed guy and it was already three hours later where I came from.  I’ll get into my weakness as a social butterfly some other time – or not.

Today promises some good sessions, an NLGJA membership meeting, and lgbtSr contributor Judy Rickard on a panel on immigration.  Maybe we’ll get some slot play in, too.

My partner Frank and I are heading to JFK soon for our flight to Las Vegas.  We’re going to UNITY 2012, the large gathering of minority journalists that takes place every four years.  This is the first NLGJA  (National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association) has been a member, and the first that NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) has not!  It should be interesting.  Look for a post each morning, and our live-from-the-hotel-room podcast on Friday, 08.30 am PT/11.30 ET with guests and breakfast.

lgbtSr gets a new home 0

Cross-posted from lgbtSr.com

3, 2, 1 . . . liftoff. We have a new home as you can see from the screenshot. It was time to move to a third-party host where we own the building. The heavy lifting is done and there’ll be plenty of tweaks in the days ahead. One loose end: getting the .com moved over. We’re currently living among the .orgs, and we have nothing against them, but I expect to have the domain redirected in a week or so, if not much sooner.

It’s good to be fully back. I don’t think this will affect any email subscribers, since the Feedburner account is portable. If it does I’ll reach out to them and apologize for the inconvenience of re-subscribing if they’d like to.

As much of a hassle as it can be to move to a self-hosted third-party platform, it feels good not to have to worry that one day I’ll wake up and find the site gone. The walls, roof and everything inside belong to lgbtSr, as it should. Thanks for being here and I hope you stick around.

Our guest on this week’s ‘Aged to Perfection with lgbtSr‘ was naturalist David Mizejewski, and what a great conversation it was! You can read up about David here, but two things in particular should be highlighted from his time with us: 1) National Wildlife Federation’s ‘Garden for Wildlife‘ program, where you can turn your garden into a wildlife habit and be certified, and 2) the plight of Alaska’s wolves, being destroyed for tar sands operations.

Thanks again to David for being our guest and offering his time so generously. – Mark/Rick/lgbtSr

We’ve been promoting this for a few weeks: our podcasting is going live at Blog Talk Radio. Join us for the initial, inaugural, inscrutable ‘Aged to Perfection with lgbtSr’ on Wednesday, April 4, 6:00 pm ET. Hosts Mark McNease in New York City and Rick Rose in Shreveport will be bringing it to you live with chat, news, and weekly guests as often as we can get them. Our first is Executive Chef Becky Bush, Shreveport native with a 20 year side trip to New Zealand. The shows will air every Wednesday at the same time, and be archived for anyone who wants to listen later (there’ll be a widget on the lgbtSr.com website as well with each week’s episode). Here’s a link you can bookmark now. Just cruise on over when the show starts. The phone number’s only needed if you want to get in the mix with questions after the guest portion. Hope to hear you there! – Mark/Rick
